Education, Information & Support

Speak Out

May is Mental Health Month. Watch for special programs.

Mental Health America-Augusta offers a number of programs to educate the public about mental health and mental illness, to provide practical information and referral and to enable mental health professional enrichment.  Some of our programs are listed below:

Community Service & Programs

  • Information & Referral Service – A phone/email resource for mental health questions and concerns.  Referrals are offered for counseling, support groups and public agencies.  If you need guidance or help, just call 886-7181in Staunton, or 949-0169 in Waynesboro, or email mhaa@ntelos.net.

  • Bereavement Outreach – Information on "Coping With Loss" is distributed to the families of recently deceased persons.

  • Support Groups  – MHAA sponsors free weekly support groups for those with ansiety disorder or bipolar disorder and their families and friends.  Such groups are subject to the availability of professional counselors.  Call MHAA to learn what groups are currently active and the times and places of their meetings.

Educational Programs

  • "Pearl Of Happiness"  – A unique program structured to enhance self-estem in fourth-grade children.  Taught under the direction of school guidance personnel, this program teaches that happiness and strong self-esteem come from within each person.  It's based on the booklet "In Search Of the Pearl" written by a local author for this specific age group.

  • Year One - For Newlyweds – A seven-brochure series distributed at no charge to newlyweds, it addresses potential problems during the first year of marriage.  It's an award-winning program.

  • Professional & Community Workshops – Education and/or prevention programs are presented to meet various specific needs in the community.  Workshops may be designed for mental health professionals, those in related fields, or for the members of the community.  Some recent topics have included:
