Abraxas House is a residential group home for juvenile offenders committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Our program offers practical intervention for delinquency control and provides a humanistic alternative to the institutionalization of juveniles. Abraxas House provides juvenile offenders opportunities to learn skills necessary to live productive, law-abiding lives in the community. Big Brothers/Big Sisters promotes positive youth development by matching caring, carefully screened adults with children primarily from single-parent homes. The Waynesboro Office serves children aged 6-13 in the Augusta County, Staunton, Waynesboro, Lexington and Rockbridge areas.  Volunteers must be age 18 or older and have passed the agency screening process. The selection of a child with an adult is baed on mutual interests and compatibility.

Pregnancy counseling is provided to women who are experiencing an untimely pregnancy. Professional social workers help women explore all the options available to them and their babies. Temporary foster care is provided for infants and toddlers. Children are cared for in agency foster homes while birth parents make decisions regarding the child’s future. Adoption services are provided to children and prospective adoptive parents. Before being approved as adoptive parents, clients must go through a home study process. The agency is committed to placing for adoption, children of all races and ages as well as children with handicapping conditions. The agency places children entrusted to its care as well as those in the custody of local social service departments and other private agencies.

Comfort Care Women’s Health services are free and confidential for teens and adults. COMMONWEALTH CENTER FOR CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS is a 48-bed comprehensive child and adolescent psychiatric hospital licensed and operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services. It is located in the Shenandoah Valley, in historic Staunton, in the Shenandoah Valley, near the intersection of I-81 and I-64.

The mission of Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents is to serve those children and adolescents admitted to the Center by providing psychiatric diagnostic, evaluation, and treatment services of the highest quality attainable at a reasonable cost to the Commonwealth and in coordination with the family, community services and the professional community. The Center’s services are provided to Virginia’s youth toward the goal of improvement in their lives and development of their fullest potential.

WHO IS SERVED?

The Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents functions as part of a network of mental health services provided in conjunction with area community services boards or behavioral health authorities. All admissions to Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents are prescreened through the community services board or behavioral health authority either in the area of the child’s residence or where the child is located at the time. Diagnoses of those admitted to Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents are varied, reflecting both the diversity of populations served and the comprehensiveness of the Center’s programs. These include the major categories of conduct disorders, attention deficit disorders, and adjustment disorders. The Center also serves youngsters with special symptom disorders, such anorexia nervosa, Tourette’s Syndrome, psychosomatic disorders and oppositional disorders. The majority of the children who come to the Center stay approximately 14-21 days. Length of stay, of course, varies with the individual child. The Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents offers services statewide.
