Services Provided:
Mental Health America of Augusta is a non-profit,
non-governmental, education and advocacy, volunteer
organization whose mission is: “To Work for America’s Mental
Health and Victory Over Mental Illness.” The MHA works
closely with area legislators to promote the passage of
legislation that supports the above stated mission, and
serves the community as an information and referral service,
which includes educational seminars for both the
professional community and local citizens. The MHA, a United
Way participating partner, also sponsors community-based,
on-going programs such as: YEAR One...for Newlyweds, the
Bereavement Program, Pearl of Happiness, and Bipolar and
Generalized Anxiety Support Groups. They also have a

- 24 hour, 7 day, 365 days per year emergency hotline
- Victim accompaniment to the police station,
court, and to the hospital resulting from a Sexual
Violence Assault
- Emergency shelter, food, clothing, and
transportation (emergency shelter, transportation,
food, clothing is now entitled: Project Rescue)
- Support groups are held every Thursday at 4:00
pm and TBA announced support groups are held at
different scheduled times during the year: Resume
building, Family member Bi-Polar support groups,
Latino Groups, Spa Days, other area nonprofit

- Individual counseling for sheltered clients as
well as, anyone needing counseling services. NDC
counseling is free of charge. We do not administer
medication and we are not licensed therapists. We
are counselors who are here to listen and offer
support to anyone in a crisis or
life-altering situation. We are experts in the
fields of domestic and/or sexual violence. ( The
counseling program is called Project Hope and for
our Latino clients is called Projecto Esperanza)
- Housing, employment, and education assistance
for clients residing in shelter. Weekly goal sheets
are completed and discussed individually with each
client. Transportation to work is provided for the
first week of entering shelter
- Information and referral… Every client and/or
hotline caller is given an individual safety plan,
offered Project Rescue/Project HOPE and/or given
information and referrals based on their specific
need
- Volunteer training and development… The
volunteer Coordinator will offer specific volunteer
opportunities at the NDC Thrift Store or in the NDC
Administration Office. To work directly with NDC
clients a volunteer must first receive our Level I
Training and then at a later date receive our Level
II 40 hour training.
- Educational presentations on domestic and sexual
violence to schools, churches, businesses,
civic organizations, and other public agencies
- Children’s Services…. All children residing at
NDC receive age appropriate group sessions every
Thursday at 4:00 pm. The Children’s Services
Coordinator (CSC) works as a Liaison with all school
systems coordinating transportation etc. The CSC
also does an intake on every child entering shelter.
All emergency info, disabilities, medications etc
are documented….
- NDC also has a Spanish Interpreter on staff that
offers interpretation is requested from fellow
nonprofit agencies.
- NDC operates a Thrift Store to the community.
Donations are always needed for our clients. How the
store operates: Before items are put in the store to
sell NDC clients are given vouchers to shop and
receive any clothing or household item that they
need with NO charge. The proceeds from the thrift
store only pays the SHELTER MORTGAGE and MAINTENANCE
(if necessary) costs, and the Thrift Store Manager
salary. All other employees are volunteers or
Goodwill Employees. The store also helps Saint
John’s Catholic Church by giving them the extra
clothing and toiletries we cannot store or use. All
donations are given back to the community in some
way. All budget line items with the exception of the
mortgage are covered by NDC grant awards as
previously stated.
- Finally, as our SECONDARY mission and if bed
space allows, homeless women and their children are
entered into shelter with the understanding that if
a client calls and is in imminent danger, NDC will
have to give them their space. We will give the
client a 24 hr notice if at all possible and will
also help them relocate…. to the Mission, shelters
in Harrisonburg or Charlottesville.
- PLEASE NOTE THAT NDC STAFF DOES ACKNOWLEDGE THIS
POLICY TO CLIENTS DURING THEIR PRE-INTAKE ON THE
TELEPHONE. THE CHOICE IS MADE AND SIGNED OFF ON BY
THE CLIENT REQUESTING EMERGENCY SHELTER.

People Places,Inc. provides counseling services for children and families
and assessment services for school academic problems,

The Valley Program for Aging Services, Inc. is a
non-profit agency for senior citizens’ 60 and older.
Eligibility guidelines are available from case manager.
VPAS, the Area Agency on Aging in the Shenandoah Valley,
works in partnership with community services and resources
of older adults to provide a comprehensive support system
that offers the opportunity for an independent and rewarding
life in old age. The Valley Program for Aging Services
provides the following: 1) In-Home Services: assistance
with personal care; light housekeeping; care of clothing;
meal preparation; hot, home-delivered meals; homemaker
services; respite for caregivers; and case management with
individual plan of care.
2) Legal Assistance: A
paralegal caseworker is available to advocate and assist
with legal problems such as understanding insurance and
assistance in filing claims; issues related to power of
attorney/guardianship; consumer and landlord/tenant
problems; public benefits applications and appeal; financial
problems; and other legal issues through Blue Ridge Legal

The Victim Witness Program is a program
of the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office assisting the
Commonwealth Attorney and police officers in preparing
victims and witnesses for court. They act as a liaison

| Services Provided: W oodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center
(WWRC) is a division of the Virginia Department of
Rehabilitative Services. As a comprehensive, residential
rehabilitation facility, WWRC provides a wide range of
outpatient services for persons with physical, mental and/or
emotional disabilities. Medical specialties include
evaluation, rehabilitation nursing, physical therapy,
occupational therapy, audiology, speech pathology,
rehabilitation engineering, head trauma program, deaf
services and independent living. Vocational services include
vocational evaluation, pre-vocational training, vocational
training, counseling, psychology, psychiatry, academic
studies, driver education, job seeking skills, student
internships, external training options, therapeutic
recreation, student health, postsecondary
education/rehabilitation transitioning and volunteer
services.
